The Weight of Air
Documentary (In Progress)

The Weight of Air is a character-driven documentary that follows Manitoba aerobatic pilot Luke Penner and his family as he prepares for and competes at the World Aerobatic Championship in Batavia, New York. Raised in a multi-generation aviation family and working as a flight instructor, Luke’s life is deeply rooted in the air — but as the competition approaches, the film turns its attention to what that pursuit looks like on the ground, inside the spaces where preparation, pressure, and family quietly intersect.

As training intensifies through Team Canada sessions, the National Championship in Manitoba, and ultimately the world stage, the documentary observes the rhythms of daily life, the unspoken weight carried by those closest to him, and the inherited legacy that shapes both opportunity and expectation. Rather than focusing on the spectacle of aerobatics, the film explores the emotional landscape around high-risk excellence: what it means to chase greatness, and what that pursuit asks of a person and the people who love them.

Produced by Greenlight Film Co. and Midnorth Media, and directed by David MacDonald with Director of Photography Nate Matthews, The Weight of Air is an intimate, observational portrait of performance, legacy, and the personal cost of striving for something extraordinary.
